Say goodbye to pies after you try this easy apple crisp recipe. Like most in the Northeast, we enjoy apple picking this time of year. Its always tons of outdoor fun but then I never know what to do with all these apples. I made up this simple recipe and even froze a few for a later time. This recipe can also be used with other seasonal fruit like plums, pears or a combination.
Ingredients
FOR THE APPLES:
- 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 6-8 apples, a firm mix of sweet and tart
FOR THE TOPPING:
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
- ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F
- Peel, core and cut up apples into 1 inch cubes or slices. When cutting up apples I put them in a bowl with cold water with a squeeze of lemon so they dont turn brown
- Combine cut up apples, sugar(s), flour, cinnamon and salt in a bowl
- To make the topping combine flour, sugar(s), oats and salt; then work cold butter in with fingertips, a pastry blender or a fork. The mixture should be chunky
- Add apple filling to a 9 inch pie dish
- Crumble the topping over the apple mixture evenly
- Bake for 35-45 mins or when topping is golden brown
- Let the crisp cool for 15 mins before serving. Serve warm with vanila ice cream
